We told you a couple of weeks ago about the new Don Tapas restaurant in Alvor, and now we've had a chance to try it for ourselves! It is a sister restaurant to Meu Limão Tapas and wine bar (one of our favourite restaurants in Lagos) so expectations were high! We were not disappointed!
Don Tapas is in Largo do Castelo in Alvor, opposite the municipal market. There is plenty of outside seating as well as tables inside and it is open all day every day from 9am until 11pm, with a wide choice for breakfast as well as lunch and dinner.
All the tapas is home made to Senhor Rodriguez' usual high standards and Don Tapas is managed by a lovely young lady called Ielizaveta (or Elizabeth!) who can tell you anything you need to know about the different dishes.
Don Tapas has an extensive menu with seafood tapas, meat based and vegetarian tapas plus main courses including steak, pork and fish recipes. Many of the vegetarian dishes are also suitable for vegans and Don Tapas also have a special Vegan Platter.
Clare is "our" vegan so opted for the vegan plate - a delicious platter of portions of hummus and black bean mousse, vegan chilli, mixed salad and fries - all the types of flavours she loves. She could equally well have chosen individual tapas like stuffed mushrooms, red pepper bruschetta and lentil curry but the vegan plate is her favourite!
I love seafood so had stuffed squid (perfect!), octopus salad (you must try it - it's my favourite!) and a very fresh and crispy mixed salad - perfect on a hot day and accompanied by a very nice chilled glass (or two) of white wine! I could have chosen so many different dishes - mussels in creamy sauce, prawns with coconut, spare ribs, meatballs, chicken in lemon.... they are all delicious as I've had them previously at Meu Limão but there's only so much one person can eat!!
We can highly recommend Don Tapas in Alvor and know you won't be disappointed - the food is delicious and the service excellent!
