Last night (16th August) we went to the 6th Silves Medieval Festival with Silves returning to it's Moorish past when it was known as Xelb and was the capital of the Al-Gharb.

It didn't take much imagination at all to be transported back in time! The narrow, cobbled streets had reverted to a typical Souk market with a mass of colourful stalls; wandering musicians, dancers and acrobats entertained the crowds and there was even a jousting competition in an arena opposite the river!

Silves is naturally a wonderful setting with the castle and Cathedral overlooking the town and parts of the original walls and city gate (complete with tower) just adding to the scene.

The food stalls were doing a roaring trade which was no surprise as the aroma from the barbecues was more than enough to lure you in! A nice touch was the earthenware plates and mugs (no plastic cups to be seen) and trestle tables with straw bales to sit on.

It is a hugely popular event and the streets were absolutely bustling which just added to the atmosphere. If you missed the festival this year (it was the last day yesterday), make a note in your diary for next year!
