So this is me, Clare – Co-Founder & MD at Algarve Uncovered!
I moved to “Paradise” in 2006 and will simply never forget that feeling of stepping off the plane in Faro, knowing it was a one-way ticket...for life! Walking down the steps in my vest and board shorts, the baking sunshine, the sheer excitement of already feeling like I was home!
I now live in a lovely little house in the countryside just outside Lagos, with my rescue dogs “Max” and “Lady B” (A.K.A “the furry babies”). We are living the dream Algarve Style and the kisses over the fence for my babies from my elderly Portuguese neighbour and the gifts of fresh veggies from her family, are a constant reminder of the wonderful culture that is our life forever!
Why I love September and October in the Algarve so much...
Like so many, I love peak summer (July and August) in the Algarve! We're packed to the rafters, it’s baking hot, beaches, bars and restaurants are bursting at the seams and there’s a summer party vibe like no other. But, as locals, 8 weeks of long supermarket queues and traffic everywhere can leave us a bit "frazzled".
As soon as we hit September the atmosphere just changes; there's an instant feeling of "Aaaaaah", a bit more "chill" and October's the same. There are still lots of people, just a subtle shift towards couples and groups who are holidaying after the kids have gone back to school. Then we have October half term hols for family time and the golfers start to pile in too.
The weather is still glorious, just more bearable in the mid 20’s to low 30’s. You can walk around in shorts and t-shirts and wine and dine without melting. This is a plus in my book because I like to enjoy my wine in the sunshine, something that's nearly impossible in Summer. We have Summer "closing parties" which seems so strange, like the sunshine is suddenly going to disappear! Everything's still open and all the trips, tours and activities are still running - Aqualand Algarve and Aquashow water parks are still open in September and Slide & Splash and Zoomarine Algarve theme park until November actually!
So what do I love to do in these months? Well in the work week it's the simple pleasures, a walk on the beach at lunch time (it has to be Meia Praia!), or hitting the garden to sunbathe after the clock chimes 5...and yes, soaking up the rays til 7pm is a pretty fine way to end the day! When the weekend hits, as you know, there's always a Friday Feeling Algarve Style bevy somewhere...and drinks in the sun say it all don't they! There’s loads of choice - the marina for happy hour, a beach bar with a view, a spot in town to people watch; or a lovely little Portuguese place like Trinidade or Café do Rio with ridiculously cheap prices!
On Saturday and Sunday the world (or Algarve at least) is my oyster, I'll hook up with friends for drinks, take a walk across the cliffs or a little road trip with my best mate or Dad (yesterday "Paps" and I went to beautiful Burgau!)
In October my Sis, "Pods", comes out (one of many visits in the year.. she loves the Algarve too) and this year is extra special because it's my milestone birthday and we're going to celebrate 40 in Style!!! A boat trip, Zoo Lagos, tourist train pub crawl, marina bevies, lunch at the beach, a dinner at Chinese restaurant Dynasty (fab for me being a vegan and stunning views from the terrace), trips to our favourite places Alvor and Burgau (again) all on the agenda; plus the obligatory Sis sunbathing sessions with plenty of fizz! Needless to say, super excited already!
But for now, here's to September and with 27°C at 11.30am, we're kicking off the week in phenomenal Algarve Style! Happy Monday everyone!
