Welcome to AlgarveUncovered.com!
The network dedicated to all things Algarve!
For a fairly small region in the south of Portugal, the Algarve certainly packs a lot in! It's got an abundance of gorgeous beaches (many Blue Flag award winners), beautiful and varied countryside, historic remains, accommodation for all budgets, things to do for all ages, and...not forgetting, a fantastic all-year-round climate with well over 3,000 hours sunshine!
Our Uncovered team is passionate about the 200Km-long stretch of Portuguese coastline and we want to share it with as many people as possible! We spend our days travelling up and down the Algarve, checking out the beaches, finding places of interest, taking photographs and meeting local businesses. Then we put it all together for you to see (so when you're clicking through our pages, just spare a thought for what we've gone through for you!). We have now got so much information about the Algarve in fact, that we have created specific resort guides too, providing tailored information for 31 resorts and towns! If, however, you would like any information about anything Algarve that isn't already included we are always pleased to help - simply contact us and we will do our best.
So what makes the Algarve such a great place? Well for the 100,000's of holidaymakers from around the world that descend on Faro airport each year, it's the promise of an empty diary to be filled with whatever makes the day another great day! A sun-drenched day at the beach, a boat trip, a round of golf, an afternoon surfing, or simply a wonderfully lazy day around the pool! As an added bonus it's also true to say that your holiday euro goes further in Portugal than in a lot of other eurozone countries and a drink or meal out will cost you about half as much as it would in Spain.
Maybe the cheaper cost of living is one of the reasons why hundreds of people choose to stay a little longer and make the Algarve their new home, or maybe its the family-orientated culture, or the ability to enjoy the great outdoors for so many more days of the year? Well, we can only speak for ourselves, but it's all of these things, plus more!
The climate is lovely because it is seasonal, but so much milder and drier than northern Europe. Summers are long, hot and dry but with a hint of a sea breeze to cool things down a little. Winters are mild and the first signs of spring are around December when the flowers start to open on the cliff tops and in the fields. Christmas shopping almost becomes a pleasure in the sunshine, stopping for a shot of expresso at a pavement cafe to keep you going! If long walks, leisurely or otherwise, are appealing, then visit the Algarve between December and March when it's cool enough to walk, and the wild flowers are out and the trees are in blossom.
Life in the Algarve is relaxed - to say the least! Things still get done, but it may take a little longer - you soon learn to stop getting stressed about it and adopt the 'manana' attitude too. Things happen later in the day - shows and concerts start around 10pm after a leisurely dinner and people meet up for a chat about the day when we would normally be going to bed. A walk around the block with (or without) the dog last thing at night takes on a whole new meaning when you can stop at a local café on the way round!
So have we tempted you enough to carry on reading? Or do you want to see for yourself what we are talking about?
