What to expect
Alcoutim’s village castle brings the border landscape and everyday history together. From its position above the Guadiana, it guarded the frontier and river trade. Inside, the archaeology displays trace human activity in the area, while “Jogos Intemporais” presents game boards and pieces recovered from the separate Castelo Velho site. For children, those objects offer an accessible question: what games did people play before the ones they know today?
Use that theme to give the visit a focus, then look around the defences and back towards the river. This is a modest village-scale outing rather than a full amusement-park day, so it fits naturally with time on Alcoutim’s waterfront. The hill and historic surfaces call for comfortable shoes and supervision around steps or walls. Head for Castelo da Vila when following directions; Castelo Velho is a different archaeological site beyond the centre. The municipal museum has further locations around the area, but the castle’s two permanent exhibitions are the relevant collections for this visit.
