What to expect
SandCity turns sand into an outdoor sculpture exhibition, with large scenes, figures and detailed work that reward a slower look. It offers a different family experience from a water park or zoo: the main activity is exploring the art and noticing how the shapes have been made. Children interested in building or drawing may enjoy comparing the details rather than hurrying from one large piece to the next.
The project began as FIESA in the Pêra area before moving to its Lagoa home on the EN 125. Look for SandCity’s Lagoa entrance when planning the journey from Armação de Pêra, Carvoeiro or Albufeira. The move gives the long-running sand-sculpture project a setting of its own, with the exhibition as the main reason to visit.
This is an open-air, seasonal exhibition, so choose a suitable part of the day for walking and looking closely. Leave time for pauses rather than treating the sculptures as a quick drive-by stop. A family can make a game of spotting details, recognising figures or comparing how different textures have been carved. The park calendar determines visiting dates, and outdoor conditions can affect the experience.
