Climb through the old town to the castle

The castle occupies the hill above Aljezur’s old streets. Follow a manageable route up through the settlement and pause for the outlook over the valley. The remaining walls help place the town in its landscape without needing a long monument tour. The climb is part of the outing, so choose footwear and a time of day that suit the slope rather than treating the castle as a level roadside stop.

Enjoy the town between coastal outings

Keep some time for Aljezur itself instead of using it only as an interchange between beaches. A walk through the old quarter and a meal give the day a different rhythm from the open coast. The national tourism guide highlights the town’s rural architecture and relationship with the surrounding valley. Look at the setting and streets rather than searching for the dense attraction list of a much larger city.

Choose one west-coast beach

Arrifana, Monte Clérigo and Amoreira are different outings. Arrifana offers a cliff-framed bay, Monte Clérigo combines a beach with a small coastal settlement, and Amoreira has dunes and a river-mouth landscape. Select the setting that interests you and the entrance you will use. A beach day becomes more enjoyable when you leave enough time to stay, rather than spending most of it navigating between several parking areas.

Make a proper walking plan

Aljezur connects with the Rota Vicentina network, including a route towards Arrifana. Choose a stage or a shorter outing from official route information and arrange the return before leaving. Sand, exposed cliffs and changes in ground make the terrain important. A line on a small map does not tell you how demanding a walk will feel. If walking is the main reason for the visit, choose accommodation around the route and transport you need.
