What to expect
Alcalar takes a family well beyond the Algarve’s more familiar castle period. A prehistoric community lived here around five thousand years ago, building a settlement and a group of megalithic tombs. Two funerary monuments form the public archaeological visit, allowing visitors to study the materials and construction of these ancient structures. The interpretation centre gives context for a site that can otherwise be difficult to imagine from the remains alone.
Children who like building or solving practical questions can think about how stones were moved, how an entrance was made and why people built communal tombs. This is a real archaeological site, so explore the designated visitor areas without treating the monuments as climbing equipment. Much of the outing is outdoors; practical footwear and a comfortable time of day matter. The museum in Portimão holds related finds and provides another layer of the story, with a joint ticket advertised for the two sites. Plan them as separate locations rather than expecting the museum collection to be housed beside the tombs.
