What to expect
The Museu Municipal de Faro places archaeology and art inside a historic convent at Largo D. Afonso III. Its collection includes Roman mosaics, imperial busts and inscriptions connected with Ossonoba, the Roman predecessor of Faro. Later material includes religious painting and work by Carlos Porfírio inspired by Algarve legends. The building adds another layer to the visit, making the museum a useful stop within the old town rather than a detached excursion.
For a family, a few objects can provide a better visit than a detailed tour of every case. Look for the people, animals or patterns in a mosaic, compare a carved face with a painted one, or choose a local legend to discuss afterwards. This is a museum collection rather than an indoor play centre, so match the length of the visit to your child’s interest. Temporary exhibitions may offer a different theme on a return trip. Combine the indoor rooms with time to explore the neighbouring streets, keeping the museum as one part of a relaxed Faro day.
