Zoo de Lagos

Zoo de Lagos is a dedicated animal park outside Lagos in the Barão de São João area. It gives families an alternative to the larger marine theme parks, with a visit centred on seeing animals rather than combining a long ride programme. Plan the road journey separately from sightseeing in Lagos town.

Barão de São João, Lagos

What to expect

Zoo de Lagos is the smaller-scale zoo option when an animal-focused outing is the main interest. Its published collection includes African penguins, ring-tailed lemurs, pygmy hippos, meerkats and many different birds. Children who enjoy watching behaviour can spend time comparing the primates, water birds and reptiles rather than hurrying towards rides. The zoo’s own animal guide is useful for choosing a few particular interests before you go.

The zoo is outside central Lagos in the Barão de São João area. That makes it a separate road outing from the marina, Old Town or beach. Use the zoo location when arranging a lift or driving from Praia da Luz, Burgau or another western base, and keep the return transport in the same plan. A town day and a zoo day need not be compressed into one busy schedule.

A visit can follow the children’s interests, with pauses between the animal areas and time to return to a favourite enclosure. The zoo also has places to eat and picnic, so you can build a break into the outing rather than rushing back to town for lunch. Feeding programmes and special activities have their own arrangements. Follow the staff’s directions around the animals and choose any close-contact experience separately from ordinary zoo admission.
