Praia de Quarteira – Quarteira Beach

Praia de Quarteira - Quarteira Beach‘Praia de Quarteira’ (Quarteira Beach), is a wonderful long, open sandy beach running virtually uninterrupted all the way to Faro. The water is calmed by a series of breakwaters, making it ideal for swimming in. There is a beautiful palm-laden promenade running along behind the beach, which is lined with cafés and restaurants if you want to break from the beach for something to drink or for a bite to eat.

Nearly all of the restaurants serve fresh fish of some kind, which they buy daily from the local market. The long promenade facilitates easy disabled access at several points along the length of the beach. There is parking also directly behind the beach but it can be extremely difficult to get a space in the summer months unless you arrive really early.

Praia de Quarteira is supervised and is also classed as an ‘Accessible Beach’.

A general note about Algarve beaches

Many Algarve beaches are now classified as ‘Accessible Beaches’ meaning that not only do they provide ramps, footpaths and walkways directly to the sand but also meet certain criteria for restaurant tables, bar and counter heights. They also have first aid posts and disabled toilets and should be equipped with wheelchairs, walking aids and other equipment capable of being used in the sea as well as on the beach. We include which beaches have been awarded the ‘Accessible Beach’ flag , although depending on individual abilities you may just want to know that you can park nearby or that there are no steps involved.

During the beach season (normally April to the end of September) main Algarve beaches have lifeguards present and the beach flags will be up to say whether or not it is safe to swim in the sea. A green flag means swimming permitted, yellow flag swimming is forbidden, a red flag swimming and entering the water forbidden and a blue and white chequered flag – beach temporarily unattended.
