On foot in the historic centre
A heritage walk involves height changes between the centre and the defensive sites. Choose a circuit that suits the group rather than trying to include every hill in one go. If someone prefers a shorter outing, agree a meeting point below while others continue towards the castle.
Keep water and comfortable footwear with you, and allow time to pause between stops. For mobility requirements, discuss specific routes and entrances with the venue or accommodation. A town being small is not the same as its sights having level, uninterrupted access, so use practical details rather than general accessibility labels.
Reaching the reserve
The salt marsh is a protected working landscape, not an unrestricted extension of the town centre. Select a recognised route and identify its access point. The reserve's planning documents highlight visitor-access challenges, which makes a clear departure and return plan more useful than simply setting off towards the nearest track.
Arrange a taxi or use a car for a trail start if needed, and establish where the vehicle can wait or collect you legally. If cycling, assess the surface and conditions before committing; wet tracks can change the outing. Carry your route offline and do not use roadsides as informal wildlife observation stops.
Town and coast are separate places
Altura, Praia Verde and Cabeço belong to the wider coastal offer, but each has its own approach. Choose the beach access that matches your accommodation or excursion, then use its recognised paths across the dunes. Repeating a journey to a convenient entrance is often easier than changing beaches every day.
If a car is not part of the stay, plan coastal outings with an outward and return service or booked pickup. Avoid combining the last possible beach departure with a tightly timed dinner or rail connection. A modest buffer turns the journey into part of the day rather than its main concern.
For journeys farther afield
The eastern Algarve rail route includes Castro Marim, Monte Gordo, Tavira and Faro, but reaching the local platform remains a separate leg. Check the station location against your address and the day's timetable. For some outings, a direct road journey may be simpler than connecting several short stages.
Keep a small list of destinations you particularly want to visit, then group compatible stops. A day focused on the Guadiana or inland villages deserves a different transport plan from an afternoon on the coast. When booking private transport, agree the exact pickup point rather than relying on the area name alone.
