What to expect
Castro Marim Castle stands above the town in a landscape shaped by the Guadiana, salt marshes and the border. Inside the castle, the archaeological museum brings together finds from successive periods of settlement, including the Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman era. Looking at everyday objects alongside the remains of the defences helps children understand that people lived and traded here as well as defending the site.
Build the visit around the climb, the castle spaces and a manageable selection of objects in the museum. The hillside and historic surfaces make it sensible to wear practical shoes and keep younger children close where steps or walls require care. Some other castle exhibitions use more difficult subjects, so choose which displays suit your family rather than assuming every room has the same tone. The well-known Dias Medievais celebration has its own dates, access and ticket arrangements; ordinary castle admission should not be expected to include that event. The town below offers a place to pause before travelling back towards the coast.
