A village shaped by water
The springs are part of Alte’s identity, alongside the church, traditional chimneys and small streets. Pair a walk through the centre with time by the stream to appreciate both sides of the village.
Choose your pace
A half-day can be enough for the centre, springs and lunch. Staying overnight gives the village more time, while walkers can use it as a base or stopping point on the Via Algarviana. Leave the waterfall as an optional extension rather than building the visit around a guaranteed flow.
Plan an inland visit
Alte is a separate road journey from the beach resorts. If using public transport, plan the return as well as the outward trip. Messines–Alte railway station is in Messines and still requires onward transport to the village.
Make the season part of the plan
Cooler conditions suit longer countryside walks. In hot weather, keep the village outing shorter and choose pauses in shade. Water levels and the appearance of the valley change through the year.
