Choose the village for life on foot
An address close to the historic centre makes it easier to enjoy Alte between the busier parts of the day. You can build a stay around a morning walk, a meal and time by the springs without making each outing a separate drive. That suits travellers who want a smaller place as their main base.
Look at the precise street, however. The church area, streamside and outer roads occupy different levels. If you are carrying luggage or travelling with a pushchair, trace the final approach rather than relying on the word central.
Compare the surrounding countryside
A rural stay can suit a group wanting outdoor space, privacy or a self-catering rhythm. It also changes the practical side of the holiday: your nearest meal, groceries and village walk may begin with a car journey. Plot those journeys before judging two properties by their nightly rates.
Ask about the last stretch of access, parking at the property and outdoor lighting. For a short break, an attractive countryside setting is most useful when it does not make the activities you came for difficult to arrange.
Make a walking base work
Alte lies on the Via Algarviana, with routes continuing towards Salir and São Bartolomeu de Messines. A walking stay benefits from accommodation that understands your intended start and finish points. A place near the village may be convenient for one route but still require a lift after a one-way stage.
Before reserving successive nights, decide whether you will return to Alte after each walk or move between villages. Discuss luggage, arrival time and meal arrangements with the property if you expect to be out for much of the day.
Think through a stay without a car
A short village stay can be pleasant without driving once you have reached your accommodation. Exploring several inland villages is a different proposition. Build a sample day using the regional bus planner, with a return journey at the time you actually want to travel.
A booked transfer for arrival and departure may simplify a stay spent mainly in Alte. For frequent excursions, compare that plan with a coast or town base and a separate visit to the village. The right choice depends on your intended journeys.
Compare the complete stay
For a summer booking, ask how the sleeping space is cooled and where you can sit outside in shade. For cooler months, ask about heating and the rooms you will use in the evening. A swimming pool or terrace should complement the reason you chose Alte rather than substitute for it.
Confirm the sleeping arrangement, kitchen facilities, cancellation terms and any cleaning or deposit charges together. If you need step-free access, describe the whole route from parking to bedroom. Traditional village buildings and rural houses vary too much for a broad area description to answer that question.
