A day at Praia Fluvial do Pego Fundo.
Pego Fundo brings a different kind of beach day to the Algarve. Instead of the Atlantic, the sand sits beside a bend in the Ribeira de Cadavais, close to its meeting with the Guadiana. Trees and planted areas give the bathing area a greener setting than the coastal coves.
Combine a visit with time in Alcoutim rather than treating it as a quick detour from a coastal resort. A morning in the village and an unhurried afternoon beside the water make a natural pairing. The river setting changes the atmosphere, but a calm surface should never be taken as a guarantee of safe swimming.
Parking & arrival
VisitPortugal lists an outdoor parking area at the beach. Arrive at the designated parking rather than stopping on the approach or obstructing the pedestrian route. Alcoutim is the useful base for combining the beach with a village visit.
The route to the sand
The beach is close to Alcoutim on the Ribeira de Cadavais. The bathing area has a developed approach rather than a descent down coastal cliffs. Follow the signed route to the designated beach and enter the water only within the bathing area.
Accessibility
VisitPortugal lists Pego Fundo as an accessible beach with facilities for visitors with reduced mobility. Assisted bathing equipment and support are part of the managed beach operation; arrange any help you need rather than assuming equipment is unattended or available outside the bathing season.
Facilities at the beach
- Outdoor parking
- Showers
- Beach bar
- Sunshade hire
- Gardens
- Volleyball area
The national tourism listing identifies a bar, showers, sunshade hire and a garden and volleyball area. The beach facilities belong to a managed bathing area, with service availability varying through the season.
The water & lifeguards
This is freshwater bathing on the Ribeira de Cadavais, not a beach on the main Guadiana river channel. Follow the bathing-area signs, any water-quality notices and the lifeguards’ instructions. Stay with children at the water’s edge and do not infer depth from the appearance of the surface.
The tourism listing identifies beach surveillance. This refers to the managed bathing operation, not a promise of lifeguards throughout the year or at every hour. Use the posted supervision arrangements when deciding whether to enter the water.
