The practical Algarve · illustrated

From the departure board to the right seat.

Start with the operator, direction and stop. Then use the ticket process for that service: the Algarve’s regional buses, municipal networks and trains have different arrangements.

Same town. Different service. Different ticket.

A familiar town name or shared app does not establish that a ticket works on another network. Confirm the operator and product before buying, then follow that service’s boarding instructions.

AU’s destination transport panels display published bus schedules. This teaching card uses fictional details to show the fields; it is not a service to catch.

Read route + direction + stop + date together.

  1. 1

    Network

Check which bus operator is selected, especially where both local and regional services appear.

  2. 2

    Exact stop

Match its name or code to the place you intend to board.

  3. 3

    Direction

The destination shown can be beyond your stop. Establish that your own destination is on that journey.

  4. 4

    Date and time

Select the travel day. A weekday, weekend, holiday or school-day service may differ.

The right name still needs the right location.

Find the stop using the operator’s map and the actual name or code. Stops on opposite sides of the road can have very similar names. Check the direction before settling in to wait.

Distances in AU’s bus selector are approximate straight-line distances from the destination’s mapped centre. They are separate from your location and from the route you can walk. Our cards do not supply a platform or bay number; use the station, terminal or operator’s current display for that.

The panels offer today and up to six following days within the available timetable. “No later departures” describes the selected network, stop and date. Try the appropriate other stop or network when the journey involves a connection.

Buy, board, validate or show: choose your operator.

VAMUS regional buses

  1. Choose the product
  2. Buy or validate
  3. Keep the ticket

Tickets are available through the operator’s sales channels and onboard, depending on the product. For onboard cash payment, have a sensible denomination; change is not guaranteed.

Validate a preloaded transport card at the onboard reader and wait for the confirmation sound/green indication. Buying a single ticket from the driver is a separate route from validating a preloaded card. Keep the usable ticket for inspection.

Check the product’s route and time coverage. Do not assume a regional ticket includes every municipal bus.

Vai e Vem · Portimão & Alvor

  1. Buy the right ticket
  2. Validate onboard
  3. Keep it available

A single ticket is sold onboard; other products have their own sales channels. Follow the validation instructions for the ticket medium you use.

For the card/phone products described by the operator, present the medium at the onboard validator and wait for the audible confirmation and green light. Keep the ticket during the trip. These are Vai e Vem products, with their own network coverage.

Próximo · Faro

  1. Choose the product
  2. Pay or validate
  3. Keep the medium

Próximo advertises onboard contactless payment using a physical or digital bank card. Choose the actual ticket product; an ordinary onboard ticket does not automatically become an unrestricted transfer ticket.

A digital PICK pass uses your phone for validation. A physical Próximo card topped up through PICK still needs the physical card: topping it up through an app does not convert it into a digital pass.

CP · Algarve Regional trains

  1. Buy before boarding
  2. Board the correct train
  3. Keep & show the ticket

Choose the journey through CP’s official sales channels. Follow the issued ticket’s conditions and keep it available through the journey and until leaving the station.

Onboard purchase is an exception where no sales facility is available at the boarding station or within 200 metres beyond it. Approach the inspector before or immediately after boarding, before sitting down; CP specifies cash for this purchase.

Do not apply Lisbon or Porto urban-train validator instructions to every Algarve Regional ticket.

Apanha-me! · Loulé municipality

  1. Find the route
  2. Board
  3. Travel

The municipal operator states that Apanha-me! is free and needs no ticket validation. Choose the correct local route, stop and direction, then board.

This is separate from a VAMUS regional bus serving the same town. Check the network name rather than assuming every bus in Loulé, Quarteira, Vilamoura or Almancil is free.

Check the journey home before setting off.

  1. Return stop and direction. The opposite journey may use another street or platform.
  2. The actual travel date. Check weekends, holidays and any school-day restrictions in operator information.
  3. Every connection. Include the bus, ferry, walk or taxi between the main service and the beach or accommodation.
  4. The last useful departure. Allow time to leave the activity and reach its stop.
  5. Your ticket medium. Keep the physical card where required, the issued ticket and enough phone power for a digital product.
  6. A missed-connection alternative. Know how you will get back if a service is disrupted or you finish later than planned.

For a journey beginning at the airport, start with our Faro arrival guide. It separates direct airport buses from a connection through Faro city and the final trip to your address.
