A day at Praia da Bordeira.
Bordeira feels spacious even before you reach the water. An enormous sandy basin opens behind the Atlantic frontage, with dunes and a small river adding depth to the landscape. From Carrapateira, it makes a natural choice for people who want the scale and wind of the western coast rather than a compact resort beach.
The setting is spread out. Parking by an approach does not mean the waterline will be a few paces away, especially at low tide. Carry drinking water and sun protection, and choose a route that keeps you on the designated access rather than cutting through fragile dunes. The headland views work well as a separate outing from a long beach stay.
Parking & arrival
Outdoor parking is provided on the approaches reached by surfaced road from Carrapateira. Use the designated area for your chosen entrance rather than parking along the dune edge.
The route to the sand
The final approach depends on the entrance and can involve boardwalk, steps and a walk over soft sand. Do not make crossing the river part of an essential return route.
Accessibility
The large expanse of loose sand and changes of level are significant for wheels and buggies. A continuous accessible route to the bathing area has not been verified.
Facilities at the beach
- Parking
- Beach cafés
- Restaurants
Support services are concentrated near the main approaches. The wide dune and river landscape extends well beyond those service points.
The water & lifeguards
The open west-facing shore can have strong surf and currents. Treat the river mouth separately from the supervised bathing area, and stay off cliff edges and unstable dunes.
Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
