A day at Praia do Amado.
Amado is one of the Algarve’s best-known surfing beaches. The open Atlantic frontage, broad sand and regular presence of surf schools give it a different atmosphere from a sheltered-looking south-coast cove. It suits an active outing, or simply a morning watching the surfers with Carrapateira close enough to add to the day.
Choose a recognised instructor if you want to try the waves, and treat watching and swimming as different plans. The beach’s popularity does not remove its exposure to wind and swell. Bring a wind layer as well as sun protection, and use the marked pedestrian approaches so the dunes and slopes are not worn into informal paths.
Parking & arrival
There is outdoor parking at the beach approach. Follow the signs from Carrapateira and leave the access lanes clear for beach services and emergency vehicles.
The route to the sand
Approach from the designated parking and follow the main route down to the sand. The final stretch includes uneven beach terrain rather than a seafront promenade.
Accessibility
Loose sand and the approach gradient can be difficult for wheeled access. We have not verified an adapted bathing service or a continuous wheelchair route.
Facilities at the beach
- Parking
- Beach cafés
- Restaurants
- Surf schools
The beach has support services and a strong surf-school presence. School timetables and equipment hire are separate from the public beach facilities.
The water & lifeguards
This is exposed Atlantic water, shared with surf lessons and experienced riders. Use the designated bathing zone, follow flags and keep away from board-sport areas when entering the water.
Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
