A day at Praia da Salema.

Salema combines a working fishing-village setting with an inviting sweep of sand. Boats and fishing activity remain part of the shoreline’s character, while the village gives the beach an easy relationship with a café stop or a seafood lunch. It sits between the Sagres and Lagos areas, within Vila do Bispo municipality.

Treat the village and beach as one unhurried outing. The compact seafront is best enjoyed on foot, with room left for residents, fishing operations and service vehicles. If you are staying elsewhere, decide where to leave the car before driving into the lanes closest to the water, rather than expecting a beach-front space.

Parking & arrival

Use the designated parking serving the village and follow local circulation signs for the final approach. The seafront is a small working area, not a place to rely on for parking beside your towel.

The route to the sand

Approach through Salema village using the open, signed seafront entrances. The council’s published notice closes one staircase for safety and explicitly says other entrances remain available. Do not cross a closed stairway barrier.

Accessibility

Visit Portugal lists Salema as an accessible beach. Choose the designated adapted entrance rather than a staircase or steep side street; the entire village and shoreline are not equally suitable for wheels.

Facilities at the beach

  • Parking
  • Showers
  • Beach cafés
  • Restaurants
  • Seasonal sunshades

Food and drink options are concentrated in the village. Give fishing boats and equipment space and do not treat a working section of the beach as a play area.

The water & lifeguards

Follow the bathing flags and keep clear of boat-launching activity. The cliffs and rocky ends should be given space, particularly when the tide leaves a narrower area of sand.

Vila do Bispo Council lists a bathing season from 1 June to 30 September, with lifeguards during that period. Outside it, do not assume supervised bathing.
