What to expect

Our Lady of the Martyrs became Castro Marim’s parish church as the town developed beyond its castle walls. Successive enlargements give it a different story and setting from the ruined former parish church within the castle.

Include both buildings if you want to understand how the town moved down from the fortified hill. This church is a place of worship in the living town, so its exterior and square can form the core of a visit, with any interior look fitting around parish activity.

Planning your visit

  • This is the current parish church, not the Santiago ruins inside the castle.
  • Parish worship takes priority over sightseeing.
