Igreja Matriz de Monchique

Monchique’s main church is a centrepiece of the mountain town, with Manueline stonework and a richly decorated sanctuary.

What to expect

The church’s portals and the vault of its Blessed Sacrament chapel preserve Manueline features. Inside, the image of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the decorated sanctuary add to the interest of a building whose architectural layers span several centuries.

Its central position makes it a natural stop while exploring Monchique on foot. The town’s steep streets are part of the approach, and the separate Misericórdia church and smaller chapels can extend a visit beyond the main building.
