What to expect

Nossa Senhora da Luz has medieval origins, with a Manueline chancel and an eighteenth-century gilded main altar among its notable features. The building combines several periods of local religious architecture rather than presenting one uniform style.

The church is in Praia da Luz itself, so it fits naturally into a village walk without a separate journey to Lagos. It remains a parish church, and its everyday religious role is part of its character as much as the architecture. The same building also hosts English-language Anglican worship through St Vincent’s Chaplaincy, under an arrangement with the Catholic diocese.

Planning your visit

  • Parish services take priority over sightseeing.
  • Use the village church on Praça da República, rather than travelling to a similarly named church elsewhere.
  • Catholic parish services and St Vincent’s Anglican services share this physical church; choose the relevant congregation when arranging worship.
