Igreja de Santa Maria de Lagos

Santa Maria faces Lagos’s Praça Infante Dom Henrique, giving an old-town walk a natural church stop beside the square’s maritime landmarks.

What to expect

The church grew from the town’s late-medieval Misericórdia church and became the parish church after the older Santa Maria da Graça was lost in the 1755 earthquake. Its restrained exterior opens onto a single nave and an elevated sanctuary, with a painted high altar providing a colourful focal point.

Its position on Praça Infante Dom Henrique makes it easy to combine with the waterfront and the surrounding historic streets. This is distinct from Santo António, which forms part of the Lagos museum visit; allow separate time if you want to see both.

Igreja de Santo António & Museu de Lagos

Rua General Alberto da Silveira, Lagos

The Dr. José Formosinho museum in Lagos combines local history, crafts, art and a cabinet of curiosities, with the richly decorated Church of Santo António in its visit route. The miniature village is a particular focus for families who like looking closely. This is a varied museum collection rather than a hands-on play centre.
