Capela de São Sebastião, Monchique

São Sebastião is one of Monchique’s smaller chapels, noted for an image brought from the former Franciscan convent.

What to expect

The chapel houses a seventeenth-century image of Nossa Senhora do Desterro associated with the old convent above the town. That connection makes it an interesting companion stop to the Desterro story, rather than merely another whitewashed building.

Include the chapel in a walk around Monchique’s smaller religious sites. The artwork is an interior feature, so seeing it depends on local opening arrangements; the chapel exterior can still help place the town’s religious history in context.
