A day at Ilha Deserta beach.
Ilha Deserta is the familiar name for Ilha da Barreta, one of the sandy barriers between the Ria Formosa and the ocean. There is no town frontage to explore here. The attraction is the wide beach and the feeling of having crossed away from the roads and buildings on the mainland.
Make the crossing part of the plan, with enough time for the beach as well as the boat trip. The island has beach support and a restaurant, but it is not a place to arrive assuming the choice of services will match Faro. Bring drinking water, sun protection and whatever you need between the landing and your chosen place on the sand.
Parking & arrival
Leave the car in legal mainland parking in Faro and walk to your booked departure point. There is no visitor vehicle route onto the island.
The route to the sand
Boats leave Faro’s waterfront for Ilha Deserta. Use the operator’s actual boarding point and return service, then follow the designated island paths from the landing to the ocean beach.
Accessibility
The boat, landing stage and onward path are separate access constraints. Anyone needing step-free travel should establish the vessel and boarding arrangements before booking; there is no road alternative onto the island.
Facilities at the beach
- Restaurant
- Beach support
- Sunshade hire
VisitPortugal lists beach support and dining. Boat services, restaurant opening and rentals can have different seasonal arrangements, so organise them as one outing.
The water & lifeguards
Keep away from the tidal inlet and boat channels. Use the supervised bathing zone when lifeguards are present, and leave enough time to get back to the landing without rushing.
Lifeguard supervision is seasonal and applies to the signed bathing area. Follow the flags and instructions displayed at that beach.
