A day at Praia do Farol.
Farol is the lighthouse settlement at the western end of Culatra island. Its ocean beach makes a natural partner to the boat crossing and a walk through the small village. The name is often presented as an island in visitor information, but Farol and Culatra are distinct landing points and beach approaches on the same barrier island.
Book or board a service for Farol if that is where you want to spend the day. Arriving at Culatra village instead adds a different walk and should be a deliberate choice. The settlement has cafés and restaurants, while the beach beyond it gives a more open view of the Atlantic.
Parking & arrival
Park on the mainland in Faro or Olhão, according to the departure point for your service. Passenger ferries do not take visitor cars to the beach.
The route to the sand
Take a passenger boat serving Farol, then walk through the settlement towards the ocean beach. Keep your landing point and last suitable return departure clear; timetables vary by route and season.
Accessibility
Boarding heights, gangways and the route from the landing can affect assisted access. Farol is not listed here as a guaranteed step-free beach visit; arrange suitable transport if mobility is a concern.
Facilities at the beach
- Beach bars
- Restaurants
Dining is clustered around the settlement. Carry water for the walk and do not assume the same services are available along the island’s full shoreline.
The water & lifeguards
The inlet beside the island has boat traffic and strong tidal movement. Stay within the signed beach bathing area, away from breakwaters and channel edges, and follow the flags.
Lifeguard supervision is seasonal and applies to the signed bathing area. Follow the flags and instructions displayed at that beach.
