A day at Praia da Culatra.
Culatra’s beach day starts on the lagoon side of an island with a working fishing community. After arriving at the village landing, continue towards the ocean side rather than expecting the ferry to put you directly on the main sea beach. The village and dune crossing give the visit a character quite different from a roadside beach stop.
The restaurants are another reason to leave time for the settlement. You can combine a walk, a meal and the sand without needing a vehicle on the island. Farol is a different settlement on this same island; choose the correct landing and allow enough time if you intend to visit more than one place.
Parking & arrival
Leave the car in legal parking on Olhão’s mainland waterfront or nearby town streets, allowing time to walk to the ferry. The island visit is on foot.
The route to the sand
Use a boat serving Culatra from Olhão. From the village landing, follow the pedestrian route across the island to the ocean beach; the boat crossing and the beach walk are separate stages.
Accessibility
The national tourism listing does not establish a complete step-free route. Discuss the actual boat, landing and onward beach path with the transport operator if assistance is needed.
Facilities at the beach
- Village restaurants
- Beach bar
Food is available in the settlement and beach support is limited to the serviced area. Bring water for the crossing of the island, especially with children.
The water & lifeguards
Keep away from lagoon channels and boat activity. On the ocean side, follow the beach flags and remain within the supervised area during the bathing season.
Lifeguard supervision is seasonal and applies to the signed bathing area. Follow the flags and instructions displayed at that beach.
