A day at Praia da Ilha de Tavira.

The main beach on Ilha de Tavira is at the island’s eastern end, reached by boat from the Tavira area. It is a different outing from Barril, even though both are on the same long island. Choose your departure point and beach approach deliberately rather than expecting the island name to identify one entrance.

This is the island’s more developed visitor area, with restaurants and other beach support behind the sand. Trees and the small settled area give the walk from the landing a different feel from the open dunes further along. The beach and the boat ride work best as an unhurried outing with enough time left for the return crossing.

Parking & arrival

Leave the car on the mainland at the appropriate Tavira or Quatro Águas departure area. Parking and boat tickets are separate arrangements; there is no visitor road route onto this part of the island.

The route to the sand

Use a passenger service from Tavira or Quatro Águas, according to the operating timetable, then walk from the island landing to the ocean side. The crossing is only the first part of reaching the sand.

Accessibility

Tavira Council explicitly describes the main Ilha de Tavira beach as not adapted for visitors with reduced mobility. The boat, gangway and walk to the sea are separate access constraints.

Facilities at the beach

  • Restaurants
  • Beach bars
  • Toilets
  • Showers
  • Sunshade hire

Facilities cluster behind the main beach near the settled area. They do not accompany a walk along the whole island.

The water & lifeguards

Stay clear of the inlet and boat routes at the eastern end. Choose the signed ocean bathing zone and follow its flags, allowing for the walk back to your departure landing.

Lifeguard supervision is seasonal and applies to the signed bathing area. Follow the flags and instructions displayed at that beach.
