A day at Praia de Cabanas.
Cabanas’ waterfront looks straight across the Ria Formosa to the sandy island, but the ocean beach is beyond that water and dune barrier. Take the passenger crossing from the village, then continue on the island path to the sea. The shortness of the crossing does not make it a place to wade across.
The village and beach fit naturally into the same day: breakfast or a stroll on the mainland waterfront, time on the sand, then a meal after returning. The beach offers a much wider shoreline than the view from the village suggests. Use the main supported entrance as your reference point if you head along the island.
Parking & arrival
Tavira Council lists mainland street parking in Cabanas. Use legal spaces and walk to the departure area on Avenida Ria Formosa or Rua da Fortaleza; keep working waterfront access clear.
The route to the sand
Board the authorised passenger boat from Cabanas, then follow the island’s designated pedestrian route across the dunes to the Atlantic beach. Retain the operator’s actual return arrangements for your visit.
Accessibility
Tavira Council describes Cabanas beach as not adapted for visitors with reduced mobility. The boat crossing, landing and onward beach path each add constraints to an assisted visit.
Facilities at the beach
- Beach bars
- Restaurants
- Toilets
- Showers
- Sunshade hire
VisitPortugal lists showers, dining and rentals, while the council lists the beach’s visitor services. Provision is focused on the concession area.
The water & lifeguards
Avoid the lagoon channel and boat route. On the sea side, use the flagged bathing area and do not let a walk along the island leave too little time for the return boat.
Lifeguard supervision is seasonal and applies to the signed bathing area. Follow the flags and instructions displayed at that beach.
