A day at Praia da Marinha.
Marinha is known for the limestone formations that frame its beach and the views from above the bay. It sits in Lagoa municipality, east of Carvoeiro. Make time for the view from the designated cliff-top paths before deciding whether to carry your beach bag down.
The main practical consideration is the long staircase between the upper access and the sand. A short viewpoint visit is therefore a different proposition from a full beach day. Below, keep your sitting place outside marked rockfall areas rather than seeking shade beneath the cliff. The beach’s beauty does not remove the need to leave room for the tide.
Parking & arrival
VisitPortugal lists outdoor parking. Use the signed beach parking and stay within marked spaces; roadside access must remain open. Parking availability is not guaranteed.
The route to the sand
A long staircase leads from the cliff-top access to the beach. Return by the designated route and allow for the uphill climb, especially with small children or a heavy bag.
Accessibility
The stairway rules out a continuous step-free beach approach. Those avoiding steps can enjoy designated views above, while keeping well back from cliff edges.
Facilities at the beach
- Showers
- Beach bar
- Restaurant
- Sunshade hire
- Small-craft hire
Beach concessions and equipment hire are seasonal. The village or resort has a wider choice than the sand itself.
The water & lifeguards
Keep clear of cliff bases, arches and rockfall warning zones. Do not use a gap around rocks as an assumed all-tide route to another cove.
Lifeguard cover is seasonal, not year-round. Use the staffed bathing area and follow the flags displayed on the day.
