A day at Praia do Beliche.
Beliche lies on the coast between Sagres and Cape St Vincent, tucked below tall limestone cliffs. Its enclosed shape and pale sand make it an immediately recognisable Sagres beach. The viewpoint above the cove is an easier proposition than the descent and still gives a strong impression of this coast.
The council records around forty metres of height difference on the beach staircase, so make the climb back part of your decision before going down. Carry only what you need, leave enough energy for the return and choose an alternative beach if the group needs a step-free approach. The presence of a nearby road does not make the beach itself a level-access stop.
Parking & arrival
Use the unpaved parking area by the road above the beach. The council lists approximately 80 spaces; leave the pedestrian access and the road edges clear.
The route to the sand
Access to the sand is by staircase descending the cliff, with about 40 metres of height difference. Keep to the designated stairs and respect any barrier or closure.
Accessibility
This is a substantial stepped descent. It is not suitable as a step-free beach route, and carrying a buggy down does not remove the climb back.
Facilities at the beach
- Parking
- Toilets
- Beach café/bar
The council lists a café-bar and toilets at the beach access. Locate those facilities before beginning the descent rather than expecting every service down on the sand.
The water & lifeguards
The high cliffs create a rockfall risk, and shelter from wind does not mean calm water. Keep well away from the cliff base and use the supervised bathing area when operating.
Vila do Bispo Council lists a bathing season from 1 June to 30 September, with lifeguards during that period. Outside it, do not assume supervised bathing.
