Capela de Nossa Senhora da Rocha

The small chapel on the Senhora da Rocha promontory is one of this coast’s most distinctive religious landmarks, between two cliff-backed beaches.

What to expect

The chapel stands on the rocky point separating Praia da Senhora da Rocha from Praia Nova. Its origins are debated in the national heritage record, so the setting and surviving building are a better focus than a single confident founding date.

The headland provides a rewarding exterior visit even when the chapel interior is unavailable. Combine it with the nearby coastal scenery, using the established paths and viewing areas rather than trying to reach the monument by scrambling along the cliffs.

Planning your visit

  • The chapel is on the coastal headland, separate from Porches parish church inland.
  • Keep to established paths and viewing areas around the cliff setting.
