Igreja do Divino Salvador de Alvor

Alvor’s main church stands above the old village, with an elaborate Manueline doorway that makes it one of the resort’s essential heritage stops.

What to expect

The sixteenth-century parish church is dedicated to the Divino Salvador. Its carved doorway is the first feature to look for, while the interior has three naves and a collection of altars and religious sculpture shaped by the village’s long history.

Reach it by walking uphill through Alvor’s older streets, allowing time to enjoy the village around it rather than making the church an isolated stop. The separate Misericórdia church is a different building in central Alvor and can be combined in the same outing.

Igreja de Santo António & Museu de Lagos

Rua General Alberto da Silveira, Lagos

The Dr. José Formosinho museum in Lagos combines local history, crafts, art and a cabinet of curiosities, with the richly decorated Church of Santo António in its visit route. The miniature village is a particular focus for families who like looking closely. This is a varied museum collection rather than a hands-on play centre.
