Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Montes de Alvor

The small church of Montes de Alvor offers a village-scale contrast to the larger religious landmarks in Alvor’s old centre.

Montes de Alvor, Portimão municipality

What to expect

Also known as the Ermida da Senhora da Conceição, the church is described by the municipal tourism guide as an eighteenth-century building. Its simple architecture, bell and stained glass are part of its village setting rather than a grand monument ensemble.

Montes de Alvor is inland from the resort centre. The tourism guide describes the church as closed to general public sightseeing and open for worship, so plan for an exterior view unless attending an arranged parish service.

Igreja de Santo António & Museu de Lagos

Rua General Alberto da Silveira, Lagos

The Dr. José Formosinho museum in Lagos combines local history, crafts, art and a cabinet of curiosities, with the richly decorated Church of Santo António in its visit route. The miniature village is a particular focus for families who like looking closely. This is a varied museum collection rather than a hands-on play centre.
