Igreja da Misericórdia de Alvor

Alvor’s small Misericórdia church has a memorable stained-glass window depicting the miracle of Queen Saint Isabel’s bread turning into roses.

What to expect

The church has stood in central Alvor since the seventeenth century. Its modest scale makes the details particularly rewarding: a side-wall pulpit, restrained altar and stained glass connected with Saint Isabel give it a distinct character from the village’s larger Matriz.

Its Rua 25 de Abril location fits neatly into an old-village stroll. Allow a little time to step away from the restaurant streets and look at the church itself; the main parish church lies elsewhere in the older centre, so the two are not interchangeable map pins.

Igreja de Santo António & Museu de Lagos

Rua General Alberto da Silveira, Lagos

The Dr. José Formosinho museum in Lagos combines local history, crafts, art and a cabinet of curiosities, with the richly decorated Church of Santo António in its visit route. The miniature village is a particular focus for families who like looking closely. This is a varied museum collection rather than a hands-on play centre.
