Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, Alte

Alte’s parish church is the village’s principal religious landmark, combining a long medieval history with the alterations that followed later earthquakes.

What to expect

The church’s story reaches back to medieval Alte, although its present appearance reflects repeated repairs and rebuilding. The two oval openings in the façade and the date 1829 above the entrance help tell that later story, alongside its older dedication to Nossa Senhora da Assunção.

Allow time for the square and the surrounding village streets as well as the church itself. This is a useful cultural stop when exploring inland from the coast, and gives Alte’s whitewashed lanes a clear focal point without requiring a separate museum visit.

Planning your visit

  • The official heritage inventory describes the church as visitable; interior access follows local arrangements.
  • Use Largo da Igreja in Alte, rather than churches with the same dedication in other villages.
