Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, Querença

Querença’s church overlooks its village square, with a Manueline doorway and a setting that suits a slower exploration of the Barrocal.

What to expect

The surviving main doorway belongs to a sixteenth-century rebuilding of an earlier chapel. Later changes introduced carved altarpieces, while the bell tower followed repairs after the earthquake of 1755. The Manueline font is another important part of the church’s heritage.

This is a village church in Querença, outside Loulé town. The square makes a natural pause when visiting the inland countryside, but interior access should be understood in the context of an active religious building rather than an all-day monument circuit.

Planning your visit

  • The official inventory limits interior access to liturgical use.
  • The destination is Querença village, not central Loulé.
