Igreja de Santo António, Ameixial

Ameixial’s parish church is a small religious landmark on the EN2, deep in the Algarve’s inland hills.

What to expect

The church preserves older features despite substantial changes to its appearance. These include a sixteenth-century font and an earlier side-chapel arch; its rectangular single-nave form is a reminder that important village churches need not be large or elaborately decorated outside.

Ameixial is a separate hill village, well beyond Loulé town and the beach resorts. Include the church in an inland driving itinerary or a village pause, rather than treating it as a quick walk from the coastal destinations shown elsewhere in this directory.

Planning your visit

  • The official inventory does not identify a regular sightseeing opening.
  • Ameixial is on the EN2 in the inland hills; allow for the separate road journey.
