Loulé’s Misericórdia church is known for its Manueline entrance and the carved stone cross outside.

What to expect

The doorway’s decorative stonework gives the church a very different character from a plain village chapel. A historic cross stands in front, while the church is associated with the town’s former hospital and the charitable work of the Misericórdia.

Use the church as one stop in a walking route through central Loulé, alongside São Clemente and the smaller Conceição chapel. Inside, the main altarpiece and religious images continue the story, but this building has its own visiting arrangements rather than sharing a single ticket or opening with the other churches.

Planning your visit

  • The official heritage inventory describes a visitable interior; follow the church’s current local arrangements.
  • The Misericórdia and São Clemente churches are separate buildings.
