Igreja de São Francisco, Loulé

The church of São Francisco adds a Franciscan chapter to Loulé’s religious heritage, away from the busiest market streets.

What to expect

The church is also associated with Loulé’s São Sebastião parish and the Third Order of São Francisco. Its religious identity therefore appears under more than one name in local heritage material; these names refer to the same building rather than separate attractions.

Include it in a wider town walk if religious art or architecture interests you. As with other working churches, the opportunity to step inside depends on the local programme; the exterior remains a useful stop when comparing Loulé’s different periods of religious building.

Planning your visit

  • São Francisco, the Third Order church and the São Sebastião parish designation refer to this same site.
  • Worship use takes priority over sightseeing.
