Igreja de São Sebastião, Boliqueime

Boliqueime’s parish church brings post-earthquake Baroque architecture into the village centre, a rewarding inland contrast to the nearby resort coast.

What to expect

The present church followed the destruction of Boliqueime’s older settlement in the earthquake of 1755. Rebuilding began the following year and was completed in 1759; look for that date on the main doorway rather than assuming the building is the earlier Manueline church.

The church anchors a village visit away from Vilamoura and Quarteira’s waterfronts. Its setting works well for an unhurried look at Boliqueime’s streets, while the building remains a working parish church rather than a museum with a continuous sightseeing timetable.

Planning your visit

  • The municipal heritage listing associates interior access with worship times.
  • Boliqueime is inland from Vilamoura; this is not a church on the marina.
