Igreja Matriz da Mexilhoeira Grande

Mexilhoeira Grande’s parish church combines Manueline and Renaissance details in a village setting inland from Alvor and Portimão.

What to expect

Dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção, the church has three naves and an architectural history spanning the late medieval and Renaissance periods. Its mixture of styles makes it a worthwhile contrast with Alvor’s more immediately recognisable Manueline entrance.

Mexilhoeira Grande is its own village, not a district of Alvor’s tourist centre. Combine the church with the surrounding streets when exploring the countryside between Portimão and Lagos; the local parish’s religious life determines ordinary interior access.

Igreja de Santo António & Museu de Lagos

Rua General Alberto da Silveira, Lagos

The Dr. José Formosinho museum in Lagos combines local history, crafts, art and a cabinet of curiosities, with the richly decorated Church of Santo António in its visit route. The miniature village is a particular focus for families who like looking closely. This is a varied museum collection rather than a hands-on play centre.
