Igreja da Misericórdia de Aljezur

The Misericórdia church is part of Aljezur’s older heritage quarter, with a Renaissance-style entrance and a long history of rebuilding.

What to expect

The church was rebuilt in the sixteenth century and again after the 1755 earthquake. Its entrance is the principal architectural detail highlighted by the national tourism inventory, making the exterior worthwhile even when an interior visit is unavailable.

This church belongs with an exploration of old Aljezur rather than the Igreja Nova parish church. The neighbouring sacred-art museum has its own visitor arrangements, so do not assume that museum admission or hours automatically cover the church.
