A day at Praia da Amoreira.

Amoreira is one of the Aljezur coast’s most distinctive landscapes. A wide dune-backed beach meets the river, with a dark rock formation at the northern side and open Atlantic water beyond. The contrast between ocean frontage, sand and river makes the setting worth the trip even when you are choosing a walk rather than a swim.

There are different approaches to the estuary, so decide which side you are visiting before setting off. For the main beach access, follow the road from Aljezur rather than expecting to arrive from the Monte Clérigo side and cross the water. Bring what you need for time on the open sand, where there is little natural shade.

Parking & arrival

The main beach has outdoor parking reached by the surfaced road from Aljezur. Park at the designated beach approach and use the pedestrian entrance over the dune edge.

The route to the sand

The main approach comes from Aljezur to the northern side of the river. Use the beach entrance and avoid treating the river as a pedestrian connection between banks.

Accessibility

The main approach includes sand and dune terrain. A complete step-free route and assisted bathing service have not been verified for this guide.

Facilities at the beach

  • Parking
  • Beach cafés
  • Restaurants
  • Seasonal sunshades

The main access has beach support and food services. The river bank and the wider ocean beach do not have the same proximity to facilities.

The water & lifeguards

A river-side pool is not a swimming pool. Tides move through the mouth and currents can strengthen quickly; follow the bathing flags and keep away from cliff bases.

Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
