A day at Praia da Arrifana.

Arrifana’s village sits above a narrow Atlantic bay, with white buildings stepping towards the beach and tall cliffs enclosing the sand. The dark offshore pinnacle known as Pedra da Agulha is a useful visual landmark. Surfing is part of the beach’s character, and watching the waves from above can be as enjoyable as spending time on the sand.

The descent matters here. Arrive with a plan for parking above the beach and walking down, then allow for the climb back after a day in the sun. A cliff-top view or a meal in the village offers a worthwhile alternative for anyone who would rather avoid the slope; neither requires a beach descent.

Parking & arrival

Use the signed parking before the descent into the cove. Do not count on driving to the sand or finding a space at the bottom of the narrow approach.

The route to the sand

The usual approach descends from the village towards the bay. The slope and steps make carrying bulky beach equipment harder than the map distance suggests.

Accessibility

A ramped approach is not the same as a verified accessible bathing route. We have not confirmed a continuous wheelchair route across the sand or an assisted bathing service.

Facilities at the beach

  • Parking
  • Beach cafés
  • Restaurants

Cafés and restaurants are part of the village and beach-support area. Surf providers operate here, but a lesson or equipment hire is a separate booking.

The water & lifeguards

Atlantic swell and surf activity can affect the whole bay. Keep clear of the harbour and working areas, follow the bathing flags and avoid sitting directly below the cliff faces.

Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
