A day at Praia do Monte Clérigo.

Monte Clérigo combines an open west-coast beach with a small settlement immediately behind it. It offers a more convenient setting for a café break than the remoter coves, while retaining the surf and sweeping sand that define this part of the Algarve. Rocks exposed at lower water add another reason to explore the shore without heading into the waves.

Choose a main beach entrance before unloading the car. The village roads and the ramps and steps make for different approaches, and a short-looking route on a map can still involve a gradient. For a relaxed visit, keep the beach gear manageable and leave time for the village rather than trying to add several west-coast beaches in one afternoon.

Parking & arrival

Outdoor parking is provided by the village and beach approach. Follow the road signs for Monte Clérigo and use designated spaces rather than stopping on the access ramps.

The route to the sand

A surfaced road reaches the settlement. Ramps and stairways lead to the beach, giving a choice of approach rather than a single cliff staircase.

Accessibility

Visit Portugal lists Monte Clérigo as an accessible beach. Use the designated accessible entrance; ramps do not make the whole shoreline or exposed rocks step-free.

Facilities at the beach

  • Parking
  • Showers
  • Beach cafés
  • Restaurants

The settlement has places for food and drink close to the main beach area. Showers are listed by the national tourism board, alongside the main beach support.

The water & lifeguards

This is an Atlantic surf beach. Keep clear of the rocky platforms when swell reaches them, and use the lifeguard’s marked bathing area rather than assuming the quieter-looking end is suitable.

Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
