A day at Praia de Alvor.

Alvor’s ocean beach stretches along a dune barrier to the east of the estuary. Its broad sands contrast with the harbour, channels and saltmarsh on the inland side, giving visitors two distinct coastal landscapes close together. The boardwalk network makes an outing here about more than a swim, with nature viewpoints and routes around the dunes.

Choose your entrance before leaving town. The Alvor and Torralta sections belong to the same broad beach setting, but have different approach points and support areas. A walk on the estuary boardwalk is not automatically the shortest route to your chosen patch of ocean sand. Match the entrance to the day you actually want.

Parking & arrival

Use designated parking serving your chosen Alvor or Torralta beach entrance. Leave boardwalk access clear and avoid parking on the dune margins or informal tracks.

The route to the sand

Boardwalks and formed paths cross the dunes to several parts of the beach. The estuary nature trail and the ocean beach entrances are connected but serve different purposes.

Accessibility

Visit Portimão lists accessible beach provision and an accessible nature trail. Select the designated adapted entrance; the entire length of the beach and every dune path are not equally suitable.

Facilities at the beach

  • Parking
  • Toilets
  • Showers
  • Beach support
  • First aid
  • Seasonal sunshades
  • Nearby restaurants

Facilities are grouped around beach-support areas. Torralta is another entrance/sector along the wider Alvor beach, rather than a separate place with identical facilities at every point.

The water & lifeguards

Stay away from the estuary mouth and channels, where currents and navigation differ from the open beach. Follow the bathing flags and use the supervised zone for entering the sea.

Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
