A day at Praia do Alemão.

Praia do Alemão, also known as Barranco das Canas, sits between Vau and the Ponta de João d’Arens headland. The pine grove and coastal scrub above the cliffs give it a greener backdrop than the central resort beaches. The attraction is the combination of sand, rock and headland rather than a heavily built-up promenade.

A visit to the sand and a walk along the clifftop are different plans. The Varandas sobre o Mar trail follows the upper coast towards Prainha, but it should not be treated as an informal way down to the water. Choose the designated beach approach, then enjoy the scenery without depending on a passage beneath the rocks.

Parking & arrival

Use designated public parking around the main beach approach and follow the pedestrian signs. We have not verified a parking tariff or an exact capacity for this entrance.

The route to the sand

Use the signed approach from the inland side of the cove. The clifftop nature trail is not a substitute for beach access, and rocky links along the shore depend on tide and swell.

Accessibility

Uneven coastal ground, gradients and sand are part of the approach. An adapted continuous route or assisted bathing service has not been verified for this beach.

Facilities at the beach

  • Toilets
  • Beach support
  • First aid
  • Seasonal sunshades

Visit Portimão lists toilets, beach support, first aid and a sunshade area. Facilities are at the organised beach-support point, not along the headland trail.

The water & lifeguards

Avoid the cliff bases, overhangs and caves. If water reaches a rocky passage, do not continue around it; retain the main landward entrance and follow bathing flags.

Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
