A day at Praia do Vau.
Vau is a convenient alternative to Praia da Rocha’s larger beach, with a compact bay framed by ochre cliffs. Its main approach is one reason families choose it: you can reach the beach from the developed inland side rather than depending on a long stairway from a viewpoint.
Choose Vau for a beach day centred on one bay, with services close to the principal entrance. The rocks towards the ends give the beach its character, but they also make the edge of the shore different from the main bathing area. Leave room below the cliffs and keep the developed entrance as the straightforward way back.
Parking & arrival
Outdoor parking serves the developed beach approach. Use designated spaces and leave the main pedestrian entrance clear; a space close to the beach is not guaranteed on a busy day.
The route to the sand
The main approach is from the developed side of the bay, with straightforward pedestrian access towards the sand. Use it instead of descending informal cliff paths.
Accessibility
Visit Portimão explicitly lists an accessible beach with an amphibious wheelchair. Arrange any required assistance through beach support; the listing is not a promise of equipment being available at every hour.
Facilities at the beach
- Parking
- Toilets
- Showers
- Beach support
- First aid
- Seasonal sunshades
The official list includes showers, toilets, first aid and a sunshade area. Adapted bathing support belongs to the organised beach service rather than an unattended all-year facility.
The water & lifeguards
The bay can still experience waves and currents. Follow bathing flags and stay clear of the cliff bases and the rocky passages to adjacent beaches, especially as the tide rises.
Lifeguard coverage is seasonal. Use the supervised bathing area when a lifeguard team and flags are operating; a visit outside the bathing season is a different proposition.
